Dursteel MN

Manganese Steel

Dursteel Mn is a manganese steel, work-hardening and non-magnetic.

Its non-hardened (austenitic) structure provides very high toughness.

The work-hardened (martensitic) structure, reaching up to 540 HB, provides very high abrasion resistance.

This material, featuring a work-hardening surface layer (1 to 3 mm thick) and a ductile core, is ideal for many applications combining impact and abrasion.

Technical & General Information

Hardness :

Less than 200 HB (as delivered), 490–540 HB (after work-hardening)

Mechanical properties :

Yield strength RP 0.2: 325 MPa
Tensile strength RM: 920 MPa
A%: 50
Impact energy: 27 J at −20°C
*Typical value for a thickness of 20 mm

Forming :

The exceptional mechanical characteristics of Dursteel MN make it suitable for rolling and cold bending.
Dursteel MN sheets can support bending radii very close to the plate thickness.
Conveyor rail profiles can be bent either on edge or flat.

Drilling :

Dursteel MN is difficult to drill. It requires 12% cobalt tools or carbide inserts.
Feed must be sufficient to remove the work-hardened zone during each pass.
Sharpening should be checked regularly.

NB: It is possible to obtain smooth holes with a diameter equal to the plate thickness (minimum diameter 10 mm) by plasma cutting. Please consult us on this subject.

Weldability :

Dursteel MN can be welded easily on construction steel bases.

Filler metals:
Electrodes type Safinox R312 or equivalent
Solid wire type Nertalic 51 or equivalent

Hardfacing :

Dursteel MN abrasion-resistant steel can be repaired or recharged using materials of similar chemical composition.

Filler metals:
Electrodes type Safuni Manga or equivalent

Main applications of Dursteel MN

  • Crusher hammers
  • Shot-blasting machine liners
  • Impact plates
  • Striking tools
  • Safe and vault linings
  • Vehicle armor

Why choose Dursteel MN ?

Dursteel® MN offers exceptional resistance in environments where abrasion and impact occur simultaneously.

Under the effect of impacts, its surface work-hardens naturally over 1 to 3 mm and can reach up to 540 HB, while its core remains tough (≈200 HB).

This transformation, from austenite to a very hard martensitic structure, ensures a service life far superior to conventional steels in highly stressed areas.

Conversely, if mechanical stresses are too low to trigger this work-hardening, Dursteel® MN is not the ideal solution (consult us for a suitable alternative).
